The Ethereum network is preparing for its most significant performance upgrade since the historic Merge of 2022. The Glamsterdam upgrade, now in its final testing stages, is set to go live in June 2026 and promises to dramatically increase the network transaction capacity.

What Glamsterdam Changes

The headline feature is a massive increase in the gas limit from the current 60 million to 200 million. This more than threefold increase will enable the Ethereum mainnet to process up to 10,000 transactions per second.

Beyond the gas limit increase, Glamsterdam introduces enhanced blob handling for layer-2 rollups, optimized state management, and improved validator communication protocols.

Impact on Gas Fees

By significantly expanding the network capacity, the upgrade should reduce congestion during peak usage periods, leading to lower and more predictable gas fees. This is particularly important for DeFi applications and NFT marketplaces where high fees have historically priced out smaller users.

Layer-2 Ecosystem Benefits

Layer-2 rollup networks like Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base also stand to gain significantly. Enhanced blob capacity means these networks can post more data to Ethereum at lower costs, further reducing fees for their users.

Testing and Timeline

Glamsterdam has been undergoing extensive testing on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets since February 2026. Core developers have reported successful test deployments with no critical issues.

Market Outlook

Historically, major Ethereum upgrades have served as positive catalysts for ETH price action. With Glamsterdam representing the biggest scalability improvement yet, many analysts expect it to reignite interest in ETH as an investment asset. Ethereum currently trades above $2,200.
