What is RWA Tokenization?

Tokenization is the transformation of traditional physical or financial assets into a digital representation on the blockchain. Government bond = Token that represents interest income. Real estate = Token that represents a fraction of the property. End-users = Token that represents rights.

BlackRock BUIDL

BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager, launched BUIDL in 2024 – a fund that invests in short-term government treasury and issues Tokens on Ethereum. This marked a serious institutional entry into RWA.

The potential

The RWA market may reach trillions of dollars. Government bond prices tokenized on Ethereum have already exceeded $2 billion. Fractionalization (splitting) of real estate enables a low minimum investment and higher liquidity.

Challenges

Regulation, legal transactions, and the “Oracle Problem” (how to verify that the physical asset exists and belongs to the token) are significant challenges. Read about Chainlink and Oracle.
