Price Performance

Ethereum appreciated substantially through Q3 2025, benefiting from macroeconomic conditions favorable to risk assets and increasing institutional demand. Layer 2 scaling solutions processing billions daily created genuine value to Ethereum’s settlement layer.

Relative to Bitcoin, Ethereum underperformed during Q3, reflecting traditional risk-on sentiment favoring Bitcoin as primary crypto asset. However, Ethereum’s fundamental metrics showed strengthening fundamentals.

Network Metrics

Ethereum’s transaction volume on Layer 1 declined modestly as users migrated to cheaper Layer 2 solutions. However, Layer 2 adoption accelerated exponentially. Total value locked across Layer 2s exceeded Layer 1 TVL for the first time in Q3.

Active addresses grew steadily, reflecting increasing usage from retail and institutional actors. Gas fees remained low as users adopted Layer 2s for most transactions.

Institutional Adoption

Q3 saw accelerating institutional interest in Ethereum through ETF approvals and direct protocol participation. Corporate holdings increased, with major companies adding Ethereum to treasuries alongside Bitcoin.

Enterprise RWA tokenization projects largely chose Ethereum, reflecting institutional confidence in Ethereum’s maturity and security. This enterprise focus created new value proposition beyond speculation.

Challenges During Q3

Regulatory uncertainty persisted around Ethereum’s potential classification. Questions about whether Ethereum staking constitutes securities offerings remained unresolved in many jurisdictions.

Competition from Solana and other chains increased. However, Ethereum maintained dominance in DeFi and institutional applications despite Solana’s speed advantages.

Looking Ahead

Q3 2025 established Ethereum as settlement layer for crypto ecosystem. As RWA tokenization scales and institutional participation grows, Ethereum’s fundamental value proposition strengthens independent of speculative trading.
