The total you pay comes down to a simple formula: the amount of gas your transaction uses, multiplied by the price you are willing to pay per unit of gas. Gas prices are quoted in gwei, a tiny fraction of an ether (one gwei is one-billionth of an ETH). A basic transfer of ETH from one wallet to another uses a fixed, small amount of gas. Why the same transaction costs different amounts
The gas your transaction needs is fairly stable, but the price per unit is not. It is set by supply and demand for block space. Each block can hold only so much computation, so when many people want to transact at once — a hot token launch, a market crash, a popular mint — users bid up the gas price to get their transactions confirmed first. When the network is quiet, prices fall back toward the floor. This is why fees can spike from a dollar or two to well over a hundred during periods of congestion, then collapse hours later.
The price of the underlying coin matters too. Because Ethereum gas is paid in ether, the dollar cost of a fee rises and falls with the ETH price. With Ethereum trading around $1,911 this week, a fee of, say, 0.0005 ETH translates differently in dollars than it would if ether were at $4,000. So two variables move together: how busy the network is, and how much the base asset is worth.
How EIP-1559 changed the game
In 2021 Ethereum overhauled its fee market with an upgrade called EIP-1559. Instead of a single blind auction, every transaction now pays two parts: a base fee set automatically by the network based on how full recent blocks have been, and an optional priority fee, or tip, that you add to jump the queue when you are in a hurry. The base fee rises when blocks are congested and falls when they empty out, giving users a more predictable estimate.
The twist is that the base fee is burned — permanently removed from circulation — rather than paid to validators. That design makes fees easier to forecast and also links network usage to Ethereum’s supply: the busier the chain, the more ETH is destroyed. Its Starknet network uses this to push fees far below mainnet levels, and StarkWare’s technology has powered high-volume applications across the ecosystem. Starknet also builds in account abstraction, a feature that lets applications sponsor fees or let users pay them in tokens other than ETH — smoothing away one of Web3’s biggest friction points for newcomers.
