In 2026 that promise is more mature but also more sober. What DeFi Actually Is

At its simplest, DeFi is a set of financial applications built on public blockchains such as Ethereum. Instead of signing a contract with a company, you interact with a smart contract — a program that holds funds and executes rules automatically. Swap one token for another on a decentralized exchange, deposit assets into a lending pool to earn interest, or lock coins to help secure a network. No account manager, no business hours, and — crucially — no one to call if something goes wrong. That freedom is the appeal and the risk in equal measure.

The health of the sector is usually measured by total value locked (TVL), the dollar value of all assets deposited across DeFi protocols. That figure tells a cautionary story in 2026. TVL slid through most of the year, falling roughly 39% from about $115 billion in January to near $70 billion by late summer as yields cooled and capital rotated toward stablecoins. Ethereum still anchors the ecosystem with around 53% of all TVL, decentralized-exchange volume has topped $7.2 billion in a single day during active stretches, and stablecoins in circulation have crossed $314 billion — a sign that users want DeFi’s rails without its volatility.

Staking: Earning Yield by Securing the Network

Staking is the most approachable way to earn in DeFi. On proof-of-stake networks, holders lock coins to help validate transactions and receive rewards in return. Roughly a third of all Ether is currently staked, while Solana’s staking participation sits near 68% of supply. Most people stake through liquid staking providers, which issue a tradable token representing the staked position so funds are not frozen. That convenience concentrates risk: Lido alone accounts for close to 48% of liquid-staking value, a single-protocol dominance that has no equal elsewhere in DeFi and that critics see as a centralization pressure point on Ethereum.

Staking yields are real but modest — typically low single digits annually — and they are not risk-free. Validator penalties, smart-contract bugs and the price swings of the underlying asset can all erode returns. Treat advertised percentages as a starting point for research, not a guarantee.

Layer 2: Making Ethereum Cheap Enough to Use

Ethereum’s biggest historical weakness was cost. When the network is busy, gas fees spike, and a simple swap can cost more than the trade is worth. Layer 2 networks solve this by processing transactions off the main chain and posting compressed proofs back to Ethereum, inheriting its security while cutting fees dramatically. Layer 2 is not a monolith, and 2026 has separated the winners from the strugglers. Some rollups lost more than half their deposited value as incentives dried up, and at least one high-profile network shed close to 75% of its TVL. The lesson for users is simple: bridge to established Layer 2 networks with audited contracts and deep liquidity, and be wary of chasing eye-watering yields on unproven chains.

The Security Reality

DeFi’s openness is also its attack surface. Across 2026 the sector recorded roughly 121 hacks totaling about $942 million in losses. Two incidents — a $295 million breach at one derivatives protocol and a $293 million exploit at a staking platform — accounted for more than half of that damage. These are not obscure projects; scale is no guarantee of safety when the underlying code is flawed. Before depositing anywhere, check whether contracts have been independently audited, how long the protocol has operated without incident, and whether an insurance or bug-bounty program exists. Israel sits closer to the heart of this technology than many realize.
