In 2021, NFTs like CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club sold for millions of dollars. OpenSea reached a trading volume of billions. In 2022-2023, the NFT market collapsed with a 95%+ drop in volume. Artists who put in a lot of effort saw that their works were worth less than the cost of gas.
What survived?
The projects that managed to survive and validate themselves: NFT Gaming (Axie Infinity, Gods Unchained), music and protected authorities, and NFT event tickets. Sports card NFTs (Tops Shot CEOs) continued to find a market. Web3 “biology” involving real ownership of items within games grew.
The New Age of NFT
In 2025, NFTs are a far reality from the speculation of 2021. They are still here, but with practical applications: copyright, VIP membership in the DAO, virtual land in the Metaverse (which also recovered from the crash). The volume is lower, but the activity is more authentic.
