The answer is crypto custody, the practice of securely storing the private keys that control digital assets. Why Custody Is the Hardest Problem in Crypto

In traditional finance, if you lose your bank card the bank can freeze the account and reissue it. Crypto has no such safety net. For a fund, an exchange, or an ETF issuer safeguarding billions on behalf of clients, a single key stored in one place is an unacceptable risk. Institutional custody exists to solve exactly that problem.

Hot Wallets vs Cold Storage

The first distinction in any custody setup is between hot and cold storage. A hot wallet is connected to the internet, which makes it convenient for frequent transactions but also exposed to hackers. A cold wallet keeps the private keys completely offline, often on a device that has never touched the internet, which is far more secure but slower to access.

Serious custodians use a tiered model: a small percentage of assets sits in hot wallets to handle day-to-day withdrawals, while the vast majority is locked in deep cold storage, sometimes in physical vaults protected by biometric access, air-gapped hardware, and geographic distribution across multiple secure sites. The goal is simple: even a total breach of the hot layer should never threaten the bulk of client funds.

The Modern Answer: MPC and Multisig

The biggest advance in institutional custody has been eliminating the single key altogether. Two technologies dominate. Multisignature (multisig) wallets require several independent keys to approve a transaction, for example three out of five, so no one person can move funds alone. Multi-party computation (MPC) goes further: the private key is never assembled in one place at all. Instead it is mathematically split into shares held by different parties or devices, and transactions are signed collaboratively without any single share ever revealing the whole key.

MPC has become the institutional standard because it removes the single point of failure while keeping operations fast and flexible. If one share is compromised or one device fails, the assets remain safe and recoverable. Qualified Custodians and Regulation

For regulated products, technology is only half the story; the law matters just as much. A qualified custodian is a regulated entity legally authorized to hold client assets, subject to audits, capital requirements, and strict operational controls. When a spot Bitcoin or Ethereum ETF launches, the coins backing it are not held by the fund manager directly but by such a custodian, which is why names like Coinbase Custody and BitGo appear repeatedly in ETF filings.

Regulators in the United States and Europe are steadily tightening the rules for who may custody digital assets and how client funds must be segregated from company funds, a lesson learned painfully from the collapse of several exchanges that mingled the two. The Israeli Angle: A Custody Superpower

Israel is arguably the world capital of institutional crypto custody. Fireblocks, founded in Tel Aviv in 2018 by veterans of the country’s cyber-security world, pioneered the MPC approach that much of the industry now relies on and has processed trillions of dollars in digital-asset transfers for banks, exchanges, and custodians. It became one of Israel’s most valuable fintech companies precisely because custody turned out to be the infrastructure everyone else needed.

It is not alone. GK8, another Israeli company built by former defense-sector engineers, specialized in true air-gapped cold custody and was acquired by a major digital-asset firm, while a broader cluster of Israeli security startups continues to supply the key-management technology behind global custodians. On the regulatory side, the Bank of Israel’s digital-shekel research and the Israel Securities Authority’s growing engagement with tokenized assets mean local players are shaping standards as well as products. When a U.S. ETF safely stores billions in Bitcoin, there is a good chance Israeli technology is quietly doing the guarding.

Custody is where crypto’s radical idea, that you can own an asset with no intermediary, meets the practical demands of a multi-trillion-dollar market. The solution is not to abandon self-sovereignty but to engineer around its risks: split the keys, keep most assets offline, wrap it all in regulation, and audit relentlessly. For individuals, a good hardware wallet remains the foundation.
