The background: from the peak to the fall

In 2021, NFTs like CryptoPunks and Bored Ape Yacht Club sold for millions of dollars. OpenSea reached a trading volume of billions. In 2022-2023, the NFT market collapsed with a 95%+ drop in volume. Artists who put in a lot of effort saw that their works were worth less than the cost of gas.

What survived?

The projects that managed to survive and validate themselves: NFT Gaming (Axie Infinity, Gods Unchained), music and protected authorities, and NFT event tickets. Sports card NFTs (Tops Shot CEOs) continued to find a market. Web3 “biology” involving real ownership of items within games grew.

The New Age of NFT

In 2025, NFTs are a far reality from the speculation of 2021. They are still here, but with practical applications: copyright, VIP membership in the DAO, virtual land in the Metaverse (which also recovered from the crash). The volume is lower, but the activity is more authentic.

What next?

With the wider adoption of blockchain in AI-generated content, NFT may be used as proof of ownership of AI-generated content. Read about the future of the Web3.
