Crypto Staking Explained: Rewards, Risks and Staked ETFs

Staking has moved from a niche technical activity to one of the most talked-about ideas in crypto, and in 2026 it is arriving inside regulated products that ordinary investors can buy. If you have heard that you can “earn yield” on Ethereum or Solana but were not sure how, this guide explains what staking actually is, how liquid staking and the new wave of staked exchange-traded funds work, and where the risks hide. What staking really means

Most large blockchains no longer run on energy-hungry mining. Instead they use a system called proof of stake, in which participants lock up coins to help validate transactions. Those participants, known as validators, put their own crypto on the line as a security deposit. If they follow the rules and keep their systems online, the network pays them rewards. If they misbehave or go offline, part of their deposit can be taken away. Ethereum switched to this model in its 2022 upgrade, and Solana, Cardano and most modern chains use versions of the same idea.

For a coin holder, staking is simply the act of committing your tokens to that process, either by running a validator yourself or, far more commonly, by delegating your coins to someone who does. In return you receive a share of the rewards, typically in the range of 3 to 6 percent per year depending on the network. Think of it less as interest from a bank and more as a payment for helping to secure the blockchain.

Liquid staking: keeping your money working twice

Traditional staking has one big drawback: your coins are locked, so you cannot sell or use them while they earn. Liquid staking solves this. When you deposit through a liquid staking service, you receive a new token that represents your staked position, for example a staked-ETH token. That token keeps accruing rewards, but you can also trade it, lend it, or use it as collateral across decentralized finance. In effect, your capital works in two places at once.

This flexibility is why liquid staking tokens have become a backbone of the DeFi economy. Staked ETFs bring yield to Wall Street

The biggest 2026 development is that staking rewards are now available inside regulated funds. Morgan Stanley launched a staked Solana exchange-traded product on NYSE Arca, giving traditional investors exposure to SOL plus staking yield without ever touching a wallet. Spot Solana ETFs have recorded positive net inflows on most trading days this year and have accumulated more than $1 billion since their launch in late 2025. Similar staked-ETH structures are following, packaging on-chain rewards into a familiar brokerage wrapper.

This matters because it lowers the barrier to entry dramatically. Instead of managing private keys, choosing validators and worrying about lock-up periods, an investor can buy a single ticker. The risks you should not ignore

Staking is not free money. The first risk is slashing, the penalty a network imposes if a validator misbehaves, which can eat into the underlying deposit. The second is lock-up: depending on the chain and method, unstaking can take days, during which the price can move sharply against you. Liquid staking adds smart-contract risk, because the token representing your position depends on code that could contain bugs. And staked funds carry management fees and issuer risk that reduce the headline yield. Finally, tax and regulatory treatment of staking rewards varies by country and is still evolving.

The Israeli angle

Israel’s blockchain ecosystem has real depth in exactly the infrastructure that staking relies on: validator operations, custody, and the security tooling that keeps validator keys safe. Israeli startups and the venture funds behind them have long specialized in cryptography and key management, which positions them well as staking becomes an institutional product rather than a hobbyist pursuit. At the same time, regulation is catching up. The Israel Securities Authority has been extending its supervision over firms that handle crypto on behalf of clients, and any local service marketing staking yield will increasingly need to consider whether it is offering a regulated financial product. For Israeli investors, that is ultimately good news: clearer rules make it safer to earn on-chain rewards through licensed channels.

Bottom line

Staking is how proof-of-stake networks pay their users for helping to secure them, and in 2026 it has three faces: hands-on validation, flexible liquid staking, and simple staked funds you can buy through a broker. Each trades yield against liquidity and risk in a different way. Whichever route you consider, understand the lock-ups, the fees and the slashing rules before you commit, and treat the advertised yield as a starting point rather than a promise.
